The documents you need to get started
If you have never filed a claim to the VA for disability compensation, you will not need all four of the documents listed below. You will only need a copy of your DD214 and a copy of your Military Medical Records. If you need help obtaining any of these documents please contact me.

If you do not already have a copy of your DD214 form, there are a couple ways of getting it.
NOTE: If you have multiple terms of service, you will need to provide a DD214 for each term.
MILCONNECT
1.) Visit milconnect.dmdc.osd.mil
to login or create an account. Make sure to upgrade your DS Logon account to Premium.
2.) From your sign in page, click on
3.) Correspondence/Documentation. Then select Defense Personnel Records Information (DPRIS) from the drop down menu.
4.) Choose the "Personnel File" tab.
5.) Select "Request My Personnel File". Fill out the form. In the Document Index section, check the boxes next to the document(s) you would like to request.
6.) Click or tap on the "Create and Send Request" button.
NATIONAL PERSONNEL RECORDS CENTER
1.) Complete the "Standard Form SF 180" Request form.
Mail it to 1 Archives Drive, St. Louis, Missouri 63138.
Fax it to 314-801-9195.
Visit the NPRC in person.

This letter can be found by logging on to your VA.gov account.
Navigate to va.gov Click the blue “Sign In” button at the top right of the page. Choose an option to “Sign In” or Create an Account.
Once on the home page, click on the “VA Benefits and Health Care” tab on the navigation bar and click “Records”.
Under Get your records click “Download your VA benefits letters”.
Click “Get your VA benefits letters”.
Click on the blue button “View Letters”.
Scroll down to the “Benefit and Service Verification” and click the “+” button.
Select the information you want to show on the letter.
Click “Download letter”.

This letter can be found by logging on to your VA.gov account.
Navigate to va.gov Click the blue “Sign In” button at the top right corner of the page. Choose an option to “Sign In” or Create an Account.
Once on the home page, click on the “VA Benefits and Health Care” tab on the navigation bar and click “Disability”.
Under Manage your benefits click the “Check your claim or appeal status”.
Scroll down to your most recently Closed claim, click “View Details”.
Click on “Get your claim letters”.
Click “Download” on the Rating Decision letter you need.

This letter can be obtained by calling the VA at
1-800-827-1000. Request to speak with a representative.
Once you have a VA representative on the phone ask: “I would like an emailed copy of my VA Disability Breakdown Letter with diagnostic codes that verify my service connected disabilities.”
